The group consists of 8 artists – Professor GuYue and seven of his Master and PhD undergraduates – Li Min, Choi Souhong, Zheng Zicheng, Hu Xindi, Tan Wanfang, Guo Jiehua and Song Wei. Together they will showcase around 30 art pieces of diverse influences and resources. The applied media covers various materials such as sculpture, installation art, visual image, graphic painting, lacquer, watercolor, oil painting, acrylic, traditional Chinese ink painting, etc. «These pieces convey numerous features of contemporary arts, such as the shape, structure, time, space, theatricalization and post production, trends that are revealed through several dimensions, ideas and concepts», according to the artists’ exhibition manifest.

For these artists, «the theme “Scenes of Macau” is the backdrop that welcomes the students of Arts when they begin their learning journey, starting to observe and developing feelings for the surrounding landscape. These wanderers who come to Macau to study express their thoughts of the local images and local people through diversified media and language. Their concepts derive from the rich individuality and diversity from one another, while being similar in the universality of this Macau immersion».

GuYue graduated in 2008 from the Department of Painting at the Academy of Art&Design, in Tsinghua University, with a PhD degree in Visual Art. From 2009 to 2015, he was a painter, an associate research fellow, and a curator at the National Museum of China. Since 2015, Gu became an associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Arts at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST). His teaching and research areas are Contemporary Art Theory and Practice, and Art Management and Cultural Heritage Mapping.

Gu is a guest researcher of the Center for Visual Studies at Peking University, China; and a member of the Chinese Artists Association. He published five books and has participated in quite a few large-scale exhibitions at home and abroad. He is also Editor of the Yearbook of Chinese Contemporary Art.

The artworks will be on display until May 22nd, 2022.

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Saturday, April 30 at 5:00pm, a Strings Concert entitled “Kids’ Heart, Kids’ Music”, performed by students from 2nd to 6th grade of Primary School at Macau Baptist College.

In this concert, around 40 students aged between 8 and 12 will perform in small ensembles or solo, presenting repertoire from different periods and musical styles, composed for string instruments, namely violin and viola.

The event will also include music selected by the British Royal Music Examination, giving students who are preparing for the exam the opportunity to rehearse together and gain stage experience with their performances.

Under the guidance of music teachers Christine Sou and Alex Leong, students will perform 14 pieces, written by great composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven, François-Joseph Gossec, Gabriel Fauré, George Frideric Handel, Carl Bohm, Johann Sebastian Bach, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Lionel Bart, Antonio Vivaldi, among others.

Musical education is a teaching area that Macau Baptist College has always been gratified to implement in its learning curricula. Since 2006, elementary school has offered instrumental music classes to new students, so that everyone has the opportunity to learn an instrument. The aim is to allow children to receive a musical education from an early age, improving their artistic ambitions and cultivating learning practices that require precision, perseverance and regular training, which helps to stimulate a sense of confidence and resilience during the growth process.

This session will be held in Cantonese.

Admission is free, subject to room capacity.

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Wednesday, April 6th at 6:30pm, the Solo Painting Exhibition “Home’s Where The Heart Is” by artist Ada Zhang, a talented painter from Sichuan province, in Mainland China, that married and moved to Macau seven years ago, to depict the many hidden beauties of local urban landscape, everyday lifestyle and diverse people, through her immigrant's eyes and unique brushstrokes of impressionism.

In this exhibition, the artist will showcase 35 paintings in watercolor, oil, acrylic and mixed media, a collection of images that confirm her talent for observing and capturing the essence of what surrounds her, and composing meaningful pieces that are rich in connotations. «The locals usually forget to appreciate the beauty of their surroundings and what they experience every day. Therefore, her artworks show lots of details that she discovered in Macau from an outsider's perspective. Each of her works is like a personal diary and also a journalistic documentary of Macau», reveals the exhibition proposal.

In the words of her friend and curator, Delia Jing, «as a person arrived to a foreign place, Ada Zhang regards Macau as the home deep in her soul, because of her love for the place», also adding that «although Ada Zhang’s paintings of Macau's street scenes use watercolor as the main form of expression, the core of her ideology is still the idea of a Chinese scroll painting that she unconsciously expresses».

«In Ada Zhang’s eyes, and in the eyes of every traveler, Macau is an extremely tolerant place. Here, the traditional Tudi Gong (土地公), the God of the Earth, also blesses the tall and gorgeous casinos and the noisy restaurants, the Lighthouse of Guia reflects the trajectory of Mazu's (媽祖) blessings, the majestic Nezha (哪吒) lives next to the supreme Western God... All kinds of landscape are harmoniously placed together, like folding screens from ancient times to the present, allowing people to abandon their beliefs or disbeliefs and simply focus on observing pedestrians, the buildings, a beam of light, flowers on the wall – for those are the masterpieces that graciously delight us», testifies the curator.

Ada Zhang is from the province of Sichuan, on the western Mainland China, and specializes in watercolor, oil painting, drawing and sketching. She is a member of the Macao Arts Association, the Macao Youth Art Association, the Macao Painting Association and the Macao Contemporary Watercolor Artists Association. Her works won the Cheng Yang Bazhai Drawing Competition Award of Excellence in 2021 and were selected for the 2021 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Watercolor Biennale.

Delia Jing, curator and friend of the artist, is from Jiangsu province and has graduated from the Visual Culture Department of the Chinese Academy of Fine Arts in 2021. She is currently studying at the Faculty of Art and Design of the Macau Polytechnic University (UPM) and is interested in art history and cultural studies.

The paintings will be on display until April 14, 2022.

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Tuesday, March 22nd at 6:30pm, the Watercolor Exhibition “A Glance Over the East” by Luísa Petiz, a Portuguese artist and architect who is bringing to FRC Gallery a set of 33 recent paintings of the everyday landscape of Macau and surroundings.

In this exhibition, the artist sought to explore her interest in portraits, colors and the culture of the Orient, reproducing charming places and corners of Macau. «The temples appear among the residential buildings, highlighted by their strong colors, sculpted roofs, curved lines and details that stay in our memory. The small, open-ended, old-fashioned, ground-floor shops that sell small utensils, antiques or precious stones, among others, filled with Chinese medicinal products or the famous dried fish whose characteristic smell is felt throughout the street, occupy much of the local commerce and do not go unnoticed», is described on her art work proposal.

The illustrations represent special local places and details that caught Luísa Petiz's attention, such as «the narrow and irregular streets of the old town, full of metal awnings, balconies enclosed in cages of all colors, design and shapes, many of them covered in rust, the walls filled by air conditioning boxes and cables that seem to have no end», she also exemplifies about the project.

Moreover, “A Glance Over the East” shows a small collection of landscapes from Mainland China, which the artist has visited «when the possibility of exploring and traveling was part of the routine», according to her.

Luísa Petiz was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1995. She is an architect, graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Lisbon (FAUTL, 2018), and she currently dedicates almost exclusively to interior design and watercolor illustrations, with special attention to oriental culture.

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Tuesday, March 15th at 6:30pm, “The Tai Heng Paintings” Exhibition, by renowned Australian artist Denis Murrell, who returns to the FRC Gallery with a new collection of 12 large sized abstract paintings.

According to him, «it’s been ten years since I’ve painted large canvases, because I did not have the space for it». This project was made possible with the support of his friend and agent Suzanne Watkinson, who made available a fraction of the Tai Heng Building – in the Sai Wan Lakes area of the Macau peninsula – to be used as a studio, from where the painter could see a large part of the city that inspired him and his most recent works.

The paintings in this exhibition are the result of a continuous experience of almost 33 years with abstract painting techniques, using different materials such as acrylic paint, natural water-based pigments, China ink and absorbent paper on canvas. The art display will allow the public to observe the subtle changes that have taken place in the production of Murrell’s work, in line with his theory that «every new painting is an experiment».

Denis Murrell was born outside of Melbourne, Australia, on March 2nd, 1947. He started teaching English in Papua New Guinea for 14 years, and then in Australia, before moving to Macau in February 1989. Here he developed an artistic career and has been well recognized and awarded ever since. His work has been celebrated ten years ago, with an extensive exhibition held in November 2012 at the Macao Museum of Art, bringing together many paintings that Denis Murrell had donated over the years to that institution.

The artist is also a recurring presence at the Rui Cunha Foundation Gallery, where he has twice shown his work before: at the collective exhibition “Ponto de Partida: Pinturas de Denis Murrell e seus Estudantes”, held in January 2015, and the solo exhibition “Down and Up” in July 2017.

Meanwhile, along with “The Tai Heng Paintings” Exhibition, Denis Murrell will carry out a guided and commented tour, on Saturday, March 19 at 5:00pm, where he will talk about his work and answer questions from the visitors at FRC Gallery. The display will be held until March 19, 2022.

The Rui Cunha Foundation will co-organize on Thursday, May 5th at 6:30pm, at the FRC Gallery venue, a Conference celebrating the World Day of the Portuguese Language, under the theme “Portuguese Letters: A Woman’s Love”, in partnership with the Macau Bookworms Association, IPOR-Instituto Português do Oriente, Orient Foundation and the Consulate General of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong.
The “Portuguese Letters” date from 1664 and were attributed to Mariana Alcoforado, a nun from the Convent of Beja, who wrote them to De Chamilly, a French soldier who fought for Portugal in the War of Restoration.
It is a document of exacerbated romanticism, the result of an absolute passion and dedication, which deserved comments from writers such as Stendhal and Rousseau. Perhaps this is why it has become a masterpiece of universal literature and was consecrated as a testimony of profound love. Despite its classicism, it has aroused great interest in the field of arts: theatre, cinema and opera.
In order to expose this great literary work, the following speakers were invited to participate in the session: Victor Correia (Lisbon, via zoom) with the theme "As Cartas Portuguesas – To love in Portuguese and in the feminine"; Leonor Diaz de Seabra (in person at FRC) with "Mariana Alcoforado and her time"; Luciana Barboza (Brazil, via zoom) with "Portuguese letters at play – Emotion on stage"; Myriam Cyr (Canada, via zoom) with "Letters of a Portuguese Nun – Uncovering the Mystery behind a 17th Century Forbidden Love"; João Guilherme Ripper (Brazil, via zoom) with "Compositional procedures in the opera ‘Cartas Portuguesas’"; Shee Va (in person at FRC) with "Letter to a soul mate"; and Lawrence Lei (in person at FRC) with "A perfumed dream".

The session will be held in Portuguese, with simultaneous interpretation into Cantonese.
Admission is free.

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Thursday, April 28 at 6:30pm, the conference “Convergence and Integration of Legal Systems in Hengqin Deep Cooperation Zone”, as part of a new cycle dedicated to this important area of cooperation with Macau. The first session will be attended by Ms. Lio Xiaohong, Senior Partner at Dentons, a law firm in Hengqin. Moderating the conversation will be Mr. Zhao Lu, Senior Partner at C&C Lawyers, in Macau.

The Greater Bay Area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau (GBA) is one of the most strategic projects for the future development of the People’s Republic of China, which alone accounts for 12% of China’s gross domestic product. This is a project that aims to attract talent, companies and investment from other regions of China, but also from abroad, a fundamental aspect to cement the region’s status as a leader in innovation.

Macau has a fundamental role in the project, a role that is associated not only with its profile and status as an international tourism center, but above all as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

In this context, the newly created Deep Cooperation Zone between Guangdong and Macau in Hengqin signals a qualitative leap of the MSAR’s role in the construction process of the Greater Bay. With a market of more than 100 million people and physical space to grow (Hengqin), this is a fantastic opportunity for Macau to expand and consolidate in the regional arena, catapulting the territory towards the much-desired economic diversification.

Given the potential for business and investments, it is important to understand which legal system is best suited to accomplish those objectives. Will Macau Law expand to HengQin? Or will the Chinese Law remain in force?

As HengQin is part of a project to integrate the Macau Special Administrative Region into the Greater Bay Area, it will be interesting to acknowledge the points of convergence in both legal systems. This is the motto for the series of thematic conferences that Rui Cunha Foundation aims to organize periodically, in order to broaden the reflection and to contribute for the construction of the future legal system in HengQin.

The conference will be held in Mandarin, with simultaneous interpretation into Portuguese and Cantonese.

Admission is free, subject to room capacity.

The Rui Cunha Foundation and the Macau Portuguese School (EPM) present on Friday, April 29 at 3:00pm, one of their most emblematic projects: the program Let’s Get Justice – VIII Edition, a high-school mock court trial dedicated in 2022 to the theme of “Corruption”.

On the occasion of FRC’s 10th Anniversary, and after two years of interregnum, this event is once again included in the April Celebrations plan, with the unconditional support of EPM since the first session.

A Entrada é livre.
