The Rui Cunha Foundation presents today, Saturday, April 22nd at 9:00pm, the popular monthly Saturday Night Jazz concert, in this edition with “Sounds of the New Generation”, bringing together the Lazy Jones Quintet and the MAC Jazz Band, in the context of the 11th Anniversary of FRC Celebrations Program.

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Tuesday, March 21st at 6:30pm, the “MYPA Annual Exhibition 2023” with a set of 31 pieces by 15 artists who are members of the Macao Youth of Printmaking Association, co-organizer of the event.

Printmaking has played an important role in cultural exchanges between China and the West in Macao. «In modern History, letterpress, gravure, and lithographic printing have been introduced to mainland China through Macao. Up to now, it still influences the improvement of printing technology in China, while also stimulating the enthusiasm for printmaking creation», states de exhibition manifest.

The Macao Youth of Printmaking Association has been established for more than 20 years. The purpose of this association is to promote print art to the young generation, by holding exhibitions, workshops, promotions in school, and other activities, in order to envolve the young people in Macao to develop a deeper understanding and to discover the talents of printmaking.

«Printmaking is a replicable art media, which is more conducive to communication than painting, and allows more people to appreciate the original work in different places at the same time. Macao’s creative printmaking began to germinate in the late 1980s. After more than 30 years, it has gradually established a printmaking creation route with gravure as the main axis. Although the delicate gravure is very attractive, it needs professional gravure printing equipment to show its effect. However, relief-printing, stencil, and monotype prints do not require high equipment and still show a unique presentation».

Within the exhibition, there are many mono prints here shown, presenting different appearances and creative expressions.

The artworks will be on display at the FRC Gallery until Saturday, April 1st, 2023.

The pursuit of photography art is so much more: a kind of enjoyment and personal gratification». The artist says that “as long as there is light, it’s possible to capture the moment”. “Every piece of work I show, I hope it tells a story and creates an emotional connection. Even if I review it after a long time, it will always be a touching moment for me”, are quotes by the author revealed by Paul Ao Leong, President of Skyscape Times, in the foreword of the exhibition.

"Gazing at the Immaterial" is a reflection on human relationships in the digital age. The three generations of art designers from both sides of the Taiwan Strait have been making not only "non-materials" but also, and more importantly, a relationship between human beings. What is more important is the making of a relationship between people, to reflect on the I, to change the boundaries of the other and to heal the broken self. In the habit of the 'thing' being tied to its habitat, we reinforce patterns of behavior through habit, multidimensional patterns that both protect us and control us, ultimately distancing us from the living archetype of the body and the natural world. The three generations of art designers are a constant rewriting of grammatical non-finite verbs, oriented towards the increasing unknown, whose tense and discourse bring about a 'language of objects' rather than words, extending the life cycle of 'objects' - for the stages of growth of the life cycle. -The value-adding of things, the efficiency of development paths, and the reduction of the movement of things - 'reduction and efficiency' is not only a circular design of the material world, but also a 'future element' of contemporary artistic knowledge production. "It is also a 'future element' of contemporary artistic knowledge production.

Three generations of art designers have continued to enter the interior of 'things', or the inaccessible interior, and reuse obsolete or wasted products to give them a second life - 'things and non-things' are born again. The 'thing' and the 'non-thing' are born again. "The 'not-thing' shapes us, identifies us, and the 'thing' and the senses are constantly exchanging identities in translation. Their sustainable design is an archaeology of knowledge, from disguise to coitus. Disguise blurs the perception of paths, while coitus defines space. They are a convener of times, places, people and events, each of which is examined in his body and medium, the 'I' in the concentrated expression and transformation of his past practical experience, the ambiguity and variability that seem to spread to the unknown pathways of the body's extremities, extending the body - repairable, repairable, repairable and sustainable. -New objects that are repairable, restorable, reusable, communicable and recyclable are constantly extending our bodies, not just the 'thing' itself, in the rules of artistic practice. Their collective presence is not designed for the here and now, but for the future, to influence more people to be aware of and participate in the environment, to introduce behavior in the name of 'collaboration', to 're-occupy the earth'.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, China and Angola have established a relationship that has served as a paradigm for the rest of Africa. This presentation starts with a history of the background to this connection, its beginnings and evolution, and focuses on the points that arouse the greatest interest.

They are the economic and financial architecture, the contribution to development, the problems encountered with regard to corruption and illicit appropriation of funds, and the current situation of calibration and response to current challenges, namely, the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the burden of debt on Angolan public finances.

The whole relationship has obeyed pragmatic considerations, and Angola and China are in a mutual learning process that is constant.

Rui Verde is an Associate Researcher at the Center for African Studies of University of Oxford, and Legal Editor of MakaAngola. He also serves as Country Leader of the British Academy-sponsored international team to assess public oversight of digital surveillance for intelligence purposes in southern Africa.

The Rui Cunha Foundation will hold on the 04th of May, at 6.30 pm a talk on Gambling Urbanism, Tourism and Early Modernization in Macau (1900-1930) inserted in History and Heritage – Public Lecture Series, a new partnership between Rui Cunha Foundation and USJ – University of Saint Joseph, Department of History and Heritage.

Abstract

The history of Macau’s urban modernization since the advent of a de facto colonial rule in the mid-nineteenth century has been told through the history of infrastructure development (e.g., riverfront reclamation), city remodeling (e.g., urban plans), and architectural style shifts. Less has been said, however, about the ways Macau’s history of modernization overlaps with the history of gambling-led urbanization and how it is entangled with the genesis of tourism in Macau proper and southern China at large. This history also appears somewhat disconnected from its spatial existence. Where were located Macau’s first gambling-related developments and why? How the transition from the gambling licensing era to the early gambling monopoly years (1930s) has materialized into the cityscape? This talk examines the role of gambling as an incubator of new urban types and forms at the intersection of colonial rationalities and European and Chinese modernities within the larger tourism category in which it is embedded. It argues that Portuguese Macau’s modernizing endeavors at the turn of the twentieth century highlight the emergence of gambling as a shaping force over its urban and colonial image.

Speaker

Sheyla S. Zandonai lectures at the Department of History of the University of Macau. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology and Ethnology from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). Zandonai is the author of several publications on Macau and the recipient of the 2022 Merit Award for Macau Research in Humanities and Social Sciences (Macau Foundation and Social Sciences in China Press) for her work on the Portuguese calçada (Current Anthropology 2018, with Amaro). Its effects will be felt across a broad spectrum, including the labor market, education, healthcare, privacy, and security. As such, the role of governments, corporations, and individuals in shaping the development of AI to benefit humanity is a crucial topic of discussion. Moreover, with AI's proliferation come ethical dilemmas that require our attention.

The Rui Cunha Foundation will hold on the 19th of April, at 6.30 pm a talk on “Changes in Communications: From 5G through Digital Platforms to AI”, with Prof. Sandro Mendonça from ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon (Portugal). Event held in English.

About the session:

Few sectors have been so disrupted as telecommunications, as it transitioned from analogue to electronics while converging with information technologies. Today, the wireless set of standards known as 5G symbolises both the promise (by being fast) and the peril (flat revenues) of emergent and critical technologies. At the same time, digital platforms become the new ecosystem template for doing business but keep exerting heavy pressure on existing regulatory structures. What is more, computational rationality is challenging ethical norms from science and the arts to intellectual property and the enforcement of law. Can we see through the fog of change? In this New Era, our argument is that the principles and practice of good governance must be articulated in a dynamic and anticipatory way.

Speaker:

Sandro Mendonça is Professor at the Department of Economics, ISCTE – Lisbon University Institute. He is Invited Professor at ISEG – University of Lisbon. He is Visiting Professor at the Dept. of Economics of the University of Insubria, Italy. He has been research faculty of SPRU, University of Sussex, and he was a visiting scholar of King’s College, London. Since 2012 he teaches and supervises at the doctoral programs of the Southern Medical University (Guangzhou) and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (Chengdu).

He has experience as regulator in the electronic and digital communications sector, having served as commissioner for the Portuguese national authority. He has been advisor to the higher studies board of the Brazilian federal telecoms agency. He serves as expert of the monitoring unit of the Portuguese official national authority for cybersecurity. He was Scientific Manager at CYTED (the official Ibero-American program for science and technology, www.cyted.org) from 2014 to 2018, and remained an advisor.

His research and consultancy work mostly focus on innovation and industrial policy. He is also active in the fields of strategic foresight and conflict research. His work is cited in official reports by international organisations, including the European Commission, the OCDE, several UN agencies and programmes (such as WIPO, UNIDO, IPCC), etc.

He has maintained a civic activity for a long time, most visibly in the media. In past years, he held opinion columns in magazines like Revista Macau (the Macau-based magazine on Oriental and Portuguese-speaking affairs) and UP (the on-board magazine of TAP, the Portuguese heritage carrier). He held columns in several newspapers: Expresso (Portugal’s leading weekly new outlet), Público (Portugal’s reference daily newspaper), Diário de Notícias (the oldest mainstream daily paper) and Diário Económico (a leading Portuguese business newspaper, which survives today as Jornal Económico). His comments have featured in the Thai press, in the Finnish TV, in the Brazilian radio, in the Spanish official new agency, etc., etc..

This talk will be delivered in English and is part of the 11th Anniversary Program of the Rui Cunha Foundation.

"EPHEMERAL MONUMENTS"
Lecture by Prof. Arch. Dr. Carlos Eduardo Comas

The lecture will review an analysis of the Brazilian Pavilion at Expo2020 Dubai, authored by MMBb Arquitectos, Ben-Avid and JPG Architect, informed by the previous presentation and discussion of its three predecessors considered landmarks of modern Brazilian architecture in the twentieth century: the pavilion at the World Fair of New York 1939, designed by Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer and Paul Lester Wiener; The pavilion at Expo58 Brussels designed by Sérgio Bernardes; the pavilion at Expo70 Osaka designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha and team. The comparative analysis of the four works as ephemeral monuments celebrating national culture in a landscape International allows to list common themes and their variations, allowing to specify historiographic classifications from the recognition of the persistence in Brazil of the formal system of modern architecture, while pointing out the aesthetic limitations of a hypertrophy of visuality in architecture.

A Dra.

The Rui Cunha Foundation and MBtv Debates present on Wednesday, October 26th at 6:30pm, a conference entitled “Reimagining MICE: New Challenges and Opportunities”, inserted on the MBtv Business Series cycle.

The COVID-19 pandemic was extremely penalizing for the entire MICE industry (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions). Due to the great restrictions implemented, hybrid events (online/offline) became the only possible form of organization, eventually becoming a trend.

As we transition into the post-pandemic era, it is time to question what challenges and opportunities can be expected for the recovering of this sector. A panel of industry stakeholders and experts from Macau and Singapore will discuss the way forward for business and professionals of MICE and events, in another edition of the FRC/MBtv Debates series, co-organized under the partnership of Rui Cunha Foundation, Macau News Agency and Macau Business.

Alan Ho, President of Macao Association of Convention, Exhibition and Tourism Sectors; Bruno Simões, President of the Macau Meetings, Incentives and Special Events Association; Glenn Mccartney, Associate Professor of Integrated Resorts and Tourism Management at University of Macau; and Florence Chua, Managing Director of the Professional Convention Management Association (Asia Pacific), who will be live via zoom from Singapore, will set the tone for another important debate on Macau's economic recovery.

The session will be moderated by the Director of Macau Business, José Carlos Matias.

This conference will be held in English and broadcast live on the FRC and MBtv Facebook pages.

Admission is free.
