“A Look at Macau’s Eclectic Architecture from Four Mansions“

The Eclectic mansions at Guia Hill:

In the early 20th century, Guia Hill became a newly developed mid-level area on the Macau Peninsula, attracting many important figures in society at the time to build mansions there.

The talk attempts to describe the development of eclectic architecture in Macau in the early 20th century by introducing four former mansions at Guia Hill: the Silva Mendes House, the White House, the Vila Alegre and the Calçada da Vitória no. 55 , including the changes in outdoor and interior decoration and the surrounding environment, as well as the relevant designers.

Biography:

André Lui is an Architect, PhD in Design, and member of ICOMOS. He has graduated from the Faculty of Architecture, Universidade Tecnica, Lisbon.
From 2003 to 2005, he completed a specialist study on cultural heritage and obtained the Diplome du Centre des Hautes Etudes des Chaillot – Post Master, as well as the professional qualification of Architecte du Patrimoine in France.
Besides architecture, he has participated in many collective and individual exhibitions, including the 52nd Venice Art Biennale and the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale.
His publications in Hong Kong include: Beyond Memory: Looking Back at Architectural Conservation in Macau in the 20th Century(2020), Walking around Macau’s architectural aesthetics(2024).
