Polyphony – 2025.05.08
The Rui Cunha Foundation opens on Thursday, May 8th at 6:30pm, the Collective Art Exhibition “Polyphony”, with Gu Ye and six Doctoral Students from the Faculty of Humanities and Arts of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), co-organizer of the event.
The project features a set of 20 works that represent the forms and styles of renowned artist and Teacher Gu Yue (顧躍) and his disciples Luo Su (羅塑), Zhu Zhaohui (朱兆輝), Wang Kongbin (王孔鑌), Ding Song (丁松), Guo Weiwei (郭偉偉), and Wei Dongsheng (魏東升).
This exhibition presents a «visual feast that transcends tradition and contemporary, material and digital, local and global, through the collision of diverse media and the resonance of ideas», according to the manifest proposal. The works cover various art forms, «such as installations, oil paintings, lacquer paintings, sand paintings, and meticulous brushwork, showcasing the unique artistic ecosystem of Macau as a cultural convergence point».
The term “polyphony” originates from musical terminology, referring to the opposition and symbiosis of multiple voices. The curator introduced this concept into visual art, exploring the reconfiguration of meaning under the media fragmentation». The exhibition’s preface states: «The mission of art lies in creating cognitive disorientation. Through the confrontation between traditional craftsmanship and new media, and the interweaving of local cultural genes and global issues, it breaks the linear narrative and invites the audience to calibrate their cognition in the gap between glare and residual shadow».
Professor Gu Yue, as an academic leader, has his works and research directions running through the main thread of the exhibition. The creations of his doctoral students start from individual experiences and respond to propositions such as identity, time, and memory in the era of digital capital, forming a multi-voice resonance of thought.
This exhibition is not only a concentrated display of academic achievements, but also a speculative experiment on the essence of art. The team stated: «In this culturally layered place of Macau, ‘polyphony’ attempts to use art as a prism to reflect the symbiotic possibilities of multiple realities».
The artworks will be on display until May 17th, 2025.
Admission is free.
