Nam Van Sound Waves – 2025.05.03

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Saturday, May 3rd at 5:00pm, a “Joint Recital with Music Students from MPU”, as part of the musical concert series “Nam Van Sound Waves”, co-organized by the Macau Vocal Association. This special Bel Canto soirée will introduce new voices of students from the Music Course of Macau Polytechnic University.

The program will feature sopranos Cai Shiyi (蔡詩怡), Lei Changkun (雷嫦坤), Wu Shuangrong (吳雙蓉), You Xirui (游昔芮) and Liao Beijia (廖倍佳), as well as tenor Yang Junbin (楊竣斌) and baritone Zong Xiaohuan (宗小歡). They will be accompanied on the piano by To Ching Yin (杜政賢).

The music selected for the session includes classical pieces by composers such as the Austrians Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert, the German Johannes Brahms, the Czech Gustav Mahler, the French Claude Debussy and Reynaldo Hahn, the Italians Giacomo Puccini and Gioacchino Rossini, and the Chinese Wang Long, Qing Zhu, Huang Zi, Liu Qing, and Li Yan.

Bel Canto is considered the ultimate expression of the human voice. The Italian term was coined in the 18th century. This vocal technique emphasizes the beauty of sound and the artist’s technical ability, rather than the dramatic expression or romantic emotion. It is still taught today in similar ways as in the past.
