Ocean Walker – 2024.07.06
The Rui Cunha Foundation presents tomorrow, Saturday, July 6th at 5:30pm, + 7:00pm, two sessions of the Musical Mini Concert entitled “Ocean Walker”, a project by the local choir of Macau Soul Music Association, formed by professionals and amateurs, under the guidance of composer and pianist Addison Wong, who will be joined by musician and artist Giulio Acconci as special guest.
The event is a first for the FRC Gallery, where a small pocket concert will be recreated in the style of NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concerts, an idea with great success in the USA and internationally via YouTube. This soul music choir – Ocean Walker – will perform two identical mini-concerts, each lasting 40 minutes, showcasing several classics from Broadway musicals.
Before each song there will be a short introductory briefing, presenting a summary of the original musical, the highlighted lyrics, and the characters involved in a respective scene. This will enable a higher audience engagement and participation. It is a small-scale musical theater production – including solo and group singing, choreography and acting performances –, with a singing coach and music director, all in a limited stage blocking space.
The Ocean Walker choir was founded in 2021 and has currently 15 resident singers, aged between adolescence and thirty. They are known for their strong and energetic stage performances, with a choral sound rooted in soul and R&B(Rhythm & Blues) culture.
Addison Wong was born in Macau and went to the United States to study music when he was 16 years old. He graduated with a master’s degree in Music Composition from the University of Oregon and was later named Music Director at Bushnell University, where he continued to conduct his jazz band, choir, and orchestra, as well as teaching courses in music theory and composition. Returning to the territory, he has developed numerous personal and collective projects in the musical areas he likes, having participated several times already at the Rui Cunha Foundation‘s Saturday Night Jazz concerts.
Admission is free of charge, but seats are limited on a first-come, first-served basis.
