POSTER_extended_FBThe Rui Cunha Foundation reintroduces tomorrow, TuesdayJuly 25th, the Solo Exhibition “Plagiarism – Extended Period”, by Henry Wong (Sio Hang Wong 黃韶衡), giving the artworks of the young local artist an extended period of display, after a very short week at FRC Gallery, interrupted by a holiday back in June.

The public will be able to rediscover the drawings in colored ballpen on scratch papers, representing duets of his before and after compositions, from as early as 1997 to nowadays, but also the city skyline reproductions on silk with natural color pigments, using the Gongbi (工筆) technique of traditional Chinese painting, in a contemporary style.

There are 4 new works added, in a total of 53 pieces that show Henry Wong’s vision and art spanning 26 years, where he reflects on the meaning of his old paintings and compares them with his current work in terms of its core values.

The concept was curated by Kuan U Leong (梁珺瑜), who stated that «in the process of reflecting on the meaning of his old paintings, Wong discovered that the paintings created without external interference in his childhood contained uncertain and interesting visual energy brought about by the child’s subjective deviation. (…) To Wong, the most intuitive way of making a comparison is to copy them. In the process of copying, deviations are rationally and deliberately minimized, so that the connotation of the new work loses the vitality of a child’s painting».

Therefore, «even if two identical paintings are drawn by the same person, they will have completely varied meanings due to the different objectives that the artist had. That is to say, the painting is not the most important thing, what is more important is the meaning brought by the action behind the creation», she continued, inviting the audiences to explore it.

Born in Macau in 1994, Sio Hang Wong was once a secondary school English teacher. He later graduated from the Bachelor in Visual Arts of Macau Polytechnic University in 2022, and majoring in Chinese Painting (Fine Arts), mainly exploring contemporary art and Chinese painting. He is now a member of Macau Artist Society, Yu Un Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association of Macao, Macau Youth Art Association and Creative Macau.

The display will be held until August 5, and the artist will occasionally be at his “market sale desk”, selling art by the centimeter, for the public to choose the desired cuts and take away.

Admission is free.
