“Chi Pan . Rhythm of Lotus” Calligraphy Exhibition – 2022.01.26
The Rui Cunha Foundation opens on Wednesday, January 26th at 6:30pm, the Calligraphy and Painting Joint Exhibition “Chi Pan – Rhythm of Lotus”, by Masters So Kam Leung (蘇鑑良) and Dixon Lei (李得 之), with their disciples William Au Ieong (歐陽耀光), Pedro Lao (劉玉威) and Irene Lou (盧潔兒), members of the Chi Pun Chinese Calligraphy Learning Association (Macao), co-organizer of the event.
The exhibition will display around 40 art pieces, created by 5 renowned calligraphers and painters, an endeavor led by Master So & Company. This is a tribute to «Chi Pan, which literally means “lakeside” and has a special meaning to our group of artists. It refers to the Goose Lake, a little pond in mainland China where the great master of calligraphy, Wang XiZhi, practiced his writing technique until the lake water dried up and before achieving success. With this narrative we remind ourselves that only with hard practice will progress be achieved», refers the artists proposal.
On the “Rhythm of Lotus” title, the Association recalls that «Macau is considered a place blessed by the lotus flower, which is the emblem of the flag of the Special Autonomous Region. The lotus can be recognized as the spiritual symbol of Macao people. The exhibition also follows this theme, implying that we, being the people from a place blessed by the lotus, should properly behave like the flower described by Zhou DunYi, of the Song Dynasty, in the essay “Ode to Lotus Lovers”», they add.
The leading artist in this exhibition, Master So Kam Leung, who is a disciple of last Master Lin Jin, mentioned on various occasions that «Master Lin had written the “Ode to Lotus Lovers” with two different writing styles, on papers as large as 200 sq. ft., which is almost the size of a residential unit in nowadays Macao. Writing on such large pieces of paper is highly difficult and we used the lotus theme to show our respect for the late Master Lin’s two great works of art».
The exhibition will be displayed until February 12, 2022.
Admission is free, but subject to capacity limitations, following the health recommendations implemented by local authorities.
