Macao in the Movies . “Strings of Sorrow” (2019) – 2021.12.16
The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Thursday, December 16th at 6:30pm, the ninth film in the series “Macao in the Movies”, with the title “Strings of Sorrow”, directed by filmmaker and local musician Oliver Fa in 2019, produced by Fernando Lourenço (Chong Chin Association of Macau) and filmed entirely in Macau.
Premiered on December 2019 at the International Film Festival & Awards Macau (IFFAM), the film has not been commercially distributed to date, due to restrictions caused by the subsequent worldwide pandemic.
Lam Sieo (Cherry Chin, 錢令儀) fails to get a place in the City Orchestra after graduating from music school in Germany. However, amateur musician Ao-Ieong Fei (Carl Chan, 陳璟威), her childhood acquaintance, decides to help the arrogant and cold-hearted Lam Sieo to form a string quartet. To do so, he enlists the help of Lok Chin-I (Kimbee Leong, 梁欣), at the time a guest violist of the City Orchestra, because the latter has a good connection with Leng Fung (Oliver Fa, 花天亮), a well-established cellist in the music community. Later, with Leng Fung’s reputation in the industry, he gets the group invited to organize a concert.
But their values, motivation and interests are totally different due to their diverse origins. The many struggles and conflicts between the musicians result in a drama in which dreams clash with the hardships of reality. The film uses contemporary music as its theme to create a story that revolves around these four characters, whose incompatibility defines their relationship as a string quartet, and demonstrates the coexistence of love and hate in an emotionally chaotic way.
The session will be preceded by a short presentation by Oliver Fa. The film is spoken in Cantonese, with English subtitles. Not suitable for children under 13 (Group B). Duration is 99 minutes.
Admission is free, but subject to limited seating.
