The Rui Cunha Foundation presents this Saturday, January 23 at 9:00 pm, the first “Saturday Night Jazz” of the year, a concert that will bring the Ao Fai Group & Mars Lee Organ Quartet to the FRC Gallery to shake the rhythm of the night.

The Macau Jazz Promotion Association (MJPA), co-organizer of the event since 2014, brings two bands together in this show, formed by jazz lovers who have been exploring different styles of this musical genre, within a scope of multiple projects aimed at youth and others.

This is the case of the Ao Fai Group, led by Ao Chon Fai, one of the senior members of MJPA who has led several newcomers to the stage of FRC Gallery, to experiment and reinvent classical themes in order to encourage a passion for music and to perpetuate the heritage of jazz.

Ao Chon Fai will bring to light his most recent Horace Silver Project – about the American pianist and composer, today a jazz legend –, which consisted of learning and recreating the charismatic style of one of the pioneers of hard-bop from the 1950s. In addition to the mentor, Ao Fai, on the trumpet, the group also includes two clarinets (Peter and Tiago), guitar (Keong), piano (Mark), bass (Lawren) and drums (Roy).

After the intermission break, the Mars Lee Organ Quartet will get to the stage, with the well-known presence of guitarist Mars Lee – also president of MJPA –, of drummer Carmen Ip, of percussionist Bolo Lei and, once again, Ao Chon Fai, who will play here the quartet’s organ. The sound aims to emphasize again the hard-bop groove, this time recalling favorite songs by Lee Morgan, Wes Montgomery and Sonny Rollins.

Don’t miss it!

Admission is free.
