All the works in this set are award-winning photos by the author, with some still unpublished. The artworks have been on display since the 1st of March at the FRC Gallery. The event is co-organized by the media group and publications Skyscape Times.

For Tam Keng, «photography is not only an easy-to-learn art, it is also a way to understand the inner achievements that art can bring to a person. The pursuit of photography art is so much more: a kind of enjoyment and personal gratification». The artist says that “as long as there is light, it’s possible to capture the moment”. “Every piece of work I show, I hope it tells a story and creates an emotional connection. Even if I review it after a long time, it will always be a touching moment for me”, are quotes by the author revealed by Paul Ao Leong, President of Skyscape Times, in the foreword of the exhibition.

"Gazing at the Immaterial" is a reflection on human relationships in the digital age. The three generations of art designers from both sides of the Taiwan Strait have been making not only "non-materials" but also, and more importantly, a relationship between human beings. What is more important is the making of a relationship between people, to reflect on the I, to change the boundaries of the other and to heal the broken self. In the habit of the 'thing' being tied to its habitat, we reinforce patterns of behavior through habit, multidimensional patterns that both protect us and control us, ultimately distancing us from the living archetype of the body and the natural world. The three generations of art designers are a constant rewriting of grammatical non-finite verbs, oriented towards the increasing unknown, whose tense and discourse bring about a 'language of objects' rather than words, extending the life cycle of 'objects' - for the stages of growth of the life cycle. -The value-adding of things, the efficiency of development paths, and the reduction of the movement of things - 'reduction and efficiency' is not only a circular design of the material world, but also a 'future element' of contemporary artistic knowledge production. "It is also a 'future element' of contemporary artistic knowledge production.

Three generations of art designers have continued to enter the interior of 'things', or the inaccessible interior, and reuse obsolete or wasted products to give them a second life - 'things and non-things' are born again. The 'thing' and the 'non-thing' are born again. "The 'not-thing' shapes us, identifies us, and the 'thing' and the senses are constantly exchanging identities in translation. Their sustainable design is an archaeology of knowledge, from disguise to coitus. Disguise blurs the perception of paths, while coitus defines space. They are a convener of times, places, people and events, each of which is examined in his body and medium, the 'I' in the concentrated expression and transformation of his past practical experience, the ambiguity and variability that seem to spread to the unknown pathways of the body's extremities, extending the body - repairable, repairable, repairable and sustainable. -New objects that are repairable, restorable, reusable, communicable and recyclable are constantly extending our bodies, not just the 'thing' itself, in the rules of artistic practice. Their collective presence is not designed for the here and now, but for the future, to influence more people to be aware of and participate in the environment, to introduce behavior in the name of 'collaboration', to 're-occupy the earth'.

The Rui Cunha Foundation opens the Gallery doors on Wednesday, on January 18, 2023, for the traditional “Fai Chun . Votive Papers Offering” event, where the public may come and collect their Chinese calligraphy messages for good luck, free of charge, from 10:00am to 4:00pm, co-organzed with The Flora Garden Poetry Friends Association.

The population is invited to enter and choose their best wishes for good luck and prosperity, under the guidance of 26 local master calligraphers – such as Ung Choi Kun, Hong San San, Choi Vai Keng, and Ng Pio (Yum Fung Chan), President of the Association. Poets such as Ko Tak Kong, Chong Iat Fai and Yun Wing On will also create Spring Festival couplets on site, throughout the day, under the celebrations of the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Rabbit.

Fai Chun (揮春) is a traditional decoration, often used during the Chinese New Year, which also marks the arrival of the spring season. In English it can be translated as Spring Wave. People put the Fai Chun on the doors to create a festive and joyful atmosphere, as the calligraphic phrases mean good luck and prosperity. Typically, Fai Chun papers are red in color, with black or gold characters inscribed with a brush, aiming to protect the houses with wishes of good auspices for the year to come. Nowadays, printed and mass-produced versions are more frequent. They can be square or rectangular and hung vertically or horizontally, usually in pairs. Not only do they exist in China, but also in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

2023 is the Year of the Water Rabbit, which begins on January 22nd, 2023 (first day of the Chinese New Year) and lasts until February 9th, 2024. The Rabbit is the fourth sign in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. In Chinese culture, the Rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace and prosperity. 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope.

People born in the Year of the Rabbit are believed to be vigilant, witty, quick-minded and resourceful. They are sincere in everything they do, expecting to be treated in the same way. For those who do not know them, Rabbit natives’ kindness can make them appear weak and vulnerable. In truth, the calm personality of the Rabbit hides its confidence and strength.

Join us and pick up a pair of Fai Chun to put on your doorstep and greet the arrival of the Lunar New Year!

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Tuesday, January 10th at 6:30pm, the opening ceremony of Solo Exhibition “The Pure in Golden Age”, by Natalie Lao, who brings to the gallery walls 19 paintings on silk and paper that recreate an oriental influenced style with a contemporary focus.

Natalie Lao «uses different image elements in her works to express her views on the impermanence and change of things in the world, while warning herself not to be too forceful and persistent», reveals the project's information. According to the artist, «contradictory design concepts have always been a source of inspiration for her creations».

«The fine brushwork imitates the pattern of silk cloth and she applies it to her paintings. The visual overlap of two different elements makes people understand the primary and secondary relationship at work. Thinking and perfectly conveying ideas, she uses visual hallucinations to awaken people for a discussion about the truth and falsehood of what they see. A curtain or a silk fabric can play a role in covering objects. When she uses these imagery symbols, it is also for the sake of expressing the contradictory relationship going on in her heart: one that she hopes others will read and understand, but at the same time she fears for the impact of being noticed», according to the same text.

Born in Heshan County, south of Guangdong Province, Natalie Lao graduated in 2016 from the Macao Polytechnic University, completing the Higher School of Visual and Fine Arts’ Bachelor Degree Program (Fine Arts majoring in Chinese painting). In 2017 she entered an advanced training course on Flower and Bird Painting Themes at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. She is currently the Deputy Chairman and Executive Director of Macao Yiyuan Painting and Calligraphy Association, and the Vice Chairman of Hao Jiang Printing Society.

The artworks will be on display at the FRC Gallery until January 28, 2023.

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Monday, December 12th at 6:30pm, the opening ceremony of “Embracing the World”, a Quick Sketch Exhibition of Lok Hei’s Footprints, the celebrated local artist who will display 23 serigraphed prints and 2 original drawings of places he visited in his contemplative search for the beauty and serenity of landscapes and scenery around the globe. The project is supported by the Macau Culture Development Promotion Association.

Comprising 25 artworks, this exhibition reveals how, in the words of Legislative Council’s Deputy and Master of Arts Chan Ho Sing, «the brush of the artist covers the beautiful mountains and rivers of our motherland. And the valleys and waterways in the foreign lands. He is full of appreciation, praise, and blessings. The feelings are simple and sincere, without boundaries».

«Traveling is a form of life for people», he says, and «good memories are also a source of joy. The exhibits include scenes familiar to you and me, such as sceneries of Macau, the Forbidden City in Beijing, the landscape of Guilin, the Mausoleum of Yellow Emperor in Shaanxi, Zhujiajiao in Shanghai, Nyingchi in Tibet, the Town of Furong in Hunan, St. Petersburg in Russia, Porto in Portugal, Venice in Italy, Okinawa in Japan, etc». For Chan Ho Sing, «images are delivered to the audience’s eyes as if one belongs in it. And each can fill in the colors freely in their minds», he concludes.

Lok Hei was born in Macau and has worked in advertising design and exhibition planning for many years. He is currently the Director of China Artists Association, President of the Macau Artist Society, Director of the China Association for Preservation and Development of Tibetan Culture, standing Director of Guangdong's Association for Promotion of Cooperation Between Guangdong, Hong Kong & Macau; and Chairman of the Macau Culture Development Promotion Association. He has held “Lok Hei, Ng Wai Kin Fine Arts Exhibition” in Hong Kong and Macau; and “Lok Cheong, Lok Hei, Ng Wai Kin Fine Arts Exhibition” in Portugal. His publications include “Doors in Black and White – Lok Hei Sketch Collection”; the Manuscript of “Taijiquan Interpretation”; and the 100-meter picture scroll of “Macao Back To Common Roots”.

The artworks will be on display at the FRC Gallery until January 7, 2023.

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents tomorrow, Tuesday, November 29th at 6:30pm, the Annual Arts Showcase “Crossing the Interior Frontiers – It's time to travel!”, that will display paintings and ceramics created by about 20 participants in the process of recovery from the Ká Hó Integrated Services Center of ARTM – Association of Rehabilitation of Dependencies of Macau.

This year, the selection of handicrafts includes around 20 oil paintings, 10 watercolors and 50 ceramic pieces, many with Christmas motifs to buy as gifts for the festive season. In recent years, the arts have been an essential component in the daily life of the ARTM therapeutic community, through different activities and techniques, with a view to promoting the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing of patients, allowing their growth throughout the process of individual change.

The motto for this edition was inspired by the phrase of Mozambican writer Mia Couto: «The journey does not start when you travel distances, but when you cross your inner borders». ARTM adds that «courage helps us to go through unknown places, which are inside of us and most of the time bring to our consciousness discomfort, pain and fear. And this happens because the inner borders hide places never traveled before. It's a long journey of experience and discovery of the "Me", "You" and "We". A journey where we learn to walk slowly, at our own rhythm, and there is no rush to arrive».

The display, which has been supported by FRC since 2020, is an important moment to celebrate the results achieved by each participant in their path of reintegration into the society. The Association of Rehabilitation of Dependencies of Macau is a local non-profit organization that offers therapeutic programs for recovering from drug and other addictions, such as gambling and alcohol. ARTM also develops guidance and follow-up services for former addicts, as well as primary prevention services for young people, families, schools, and the community, with a strong commitment to public health and human rights.

The artworks will be on display at FRC Gallery until December 3, 2022.

《The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Tuesday, November 15th at 6:30pm, the Photo Exhibition “What once was, will be no more”, a project by award-winning journalist and photographer Gonçalo Lobo Pinheiro, that merges old and current images from the city of Macau and Islands, showcased at the FRC Gallery and in an author's edition Book.

There are 20 photographs, about one meter by one meter in size, that follow the evolution of the territory over decades, signed, numbered, and limited for collection purposes, up to a maximum of 3 reproductions each. The selection was made by the author, from a set of 40 images completing the book, which will be available during the inauguration, prefaced by Portuguese jurist and politician who lived in Macau, Maria de Belém Roseira.

«This book and the exhibition represent an encounter between the past and the present. The idea, which is not a first in the world, turns out to be in Macau. And the enthusiasm started there. For a little over a year, I collected old images of the territory, captured between the 1930s and 1990s, in black and white, with different formats. I have acquired them at auctions, on the Internet, from individuals, in stores and even in Portugal», explains Gonçalo Lobo Pinheiro in his proposal.

«I was ambitious in the first months of the project's execution. I conceived a final work that would include at least 100 photographs (…). But I couldn't, I assume. Or better, I managed to have about 100 images in my possession, but from those I only chose to edit and publish 40, exposing 20». And the author explains that although some scenarios are still recognizable, others simply no longer exist. «Everything has changed. Therefore, in most cases, what once was, will be no more...».

Gonçalo Lobo Pinheiro is a Portuguese photographer and journalist, born on 4 April 1979 and based in Macau for over 12 years. He started by studying Geological Engineering, but graduated in Communication Sciences, variant Journalism, at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa. He worked for several Portuguese and foreign publications as a contributor, including A Bola, o I, Público, Correio da Manhã, O Comércio do Porto, Expresso, Washington Post, BBC, The Guardian, among others. In Macau he joined the newspaper Hoje Macau, where he worked as a copywriter, photojournalist, and editor between 2010 and 2014. Winner of several awards throughout his career, he has also published several photography books. He is currently part of the editorial staff of the newspaper Ponto Final and has a collaboration with the Portuguese news agency LUSA.

The artworks will be on display at FRC Gallery until November 26, 2022.

"EPHEMERAL MONUMENTS"
Lecture by Prof. Arch. Dr. Carlos Eduardo Comas

The lecture will review an analysis of the Brazilian Pavilion at Expo2020 Dubai, authored by MMBb Arquitectos, Ben-Avid and JPG Architect, informed by the previous presentation and discussion of its three predecessors considered landmarks of modern Brazilian architecture in the twentieth century: the pavilion at the World Fair of New York 1939, designed by Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer and Paul Lester Wiener; The pavilion at Expo58 Brussels designed by Sérgio Bernardes; the pavilion at Expo70 Osaka designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha and team. The comparative analysis of the four works as ephemeral monuments celebrating national culture in a landscape International allows to list common themes and their variations, allowing to specify historiographic classifications from the recognition of the persistence in Brazil of the formal system of modern architecture, while pointing out the aesthetic limitations of a hypertrophy of visuality in architecture.

The Rui Cunha Foundation and the Docomomo Research Center of Macau present on Thursday, October 20 at 7:00pm, a lecture entitled “Building the 20th Century: Chui Tak Kei”, with the participation of Information Advisor João Guedes and Architect Rui Leão as key speakers.

The lecture will feature the achievements of businessman Chui Tak Kei (1912-2007) throughout his life, as well as his contribution to Macau society and the civil construction sector. A prominent local figure, he participated in the construction and development of Macau, through his role as a political and cultural agent, establishing a close relationship with the Portuguese community, and always expressing his interest in the social well-being of communities.

João Guedes, journalist and writer, has been an Information Advisor for the Portuguese Radio and Television Channels of TDM since 2005. Formerly he has been Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Director of Information (1997) and Director of Information and Programmes for the Portuguese Radio and Television Channels (2000). In 2018 he released the photobiography “Chui Tak Kei – History in a Biography”, where he collected for future memory the great achievements of this outstanding personality of the Chinese community in Macau.

Rui Leão, architect, is President of the Docomomo Macau Research Center and President of the International Council of Portuguese-Speaking Architects (CIALP), with a PhD in Architecture and Urbanism at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia. He also works in the editorial area, focused on heritage and urban aspects.

Theme:
Chui Tak Kei – uncle of the former Chief Executive, Chui Sai On – was a distinguished businessman and a construction investor, but above all he excelled on a social and political level, becoming Vice-President of the Legislative Assembly of Macau, and participating in the process of Macau’s transfer of sovereignty and the drafting of the Basic Law.

During World War II, he directed the Tung Sin Tong Association, a charity that provided aid to refugees, an important role because it was where he began his public life and his social and political intervention.

A leading figure in the business industry, he was President of the Macau Commercial Association – which was at the time a sort of shadow government for the local Chinese community – and would later be the founder of the Macau Civil Constructors Association, of which he became the executive chairman, and later honorary president until the end of his life.

He was a member of the Macau SAR Basic Law Drafting Commission and the SAR Preparatory Commission, as well as Chairman of the SAR Basic Law Advisory Committee.

A lover of music and Fine Arts, he devoted himself in his spare time to drawing, painting and Chinese calligraphy, in addition to being a great admirer and collector of Chinese art.

The Rui Cunha Foundation and the Macau Portuguese and English Press Association (AIPIM) present a commemorative lecture on Monday, September 12 at 6:30pm, entitled “The Bee of China: 200 Years of Press in Macau”. The initiative celebrates the bicentennial of the first issue of a newspaper ever published in Macau, the Portuguese “A Abelha da China”, which took place on September 12, 1822, as a very noticeable political orientation outlet at the time.

This date marks the beginning of the written press in Macau, which was linked to the Liberal movement in Portugal and to some supporters of that movement in Macau. “A Abelha da China” was the precursor of hundreds of titles that would then start to appear in the territory in Portuguese, Chinese and more recently in English.

The event will be an enriching session on the history of Macau and a valuable contribution of this newspaper to the history of all Portuguese-language journalism in China, allowing everyone to revisit the socio-political and cultural context of the territory at the beginning of the 19th century.

The lecture has as speakers João Guedes, journalist and author, and Daniel Pires, university professor. The moderation of the panel will be by José Miguel Encarnação, journalist and president of the Macau Portuguese and English Press Association (AIPIM).

The session will be entirely held in Portuguese, without simultaneous interpretation.

Macao’s economic prosperity at the turn of the 16th to the 17th centuries placed the small outpost in a conspicuous position and generated greed, among other facts, from the Dutch. These, since they settled in Java, believed that economic dominance of the surrounding seas was at hand. Macau was the hub of all commerce, making it an obsession for those from the Netherlands to seize the city and the pivotal role it played. It was 400 years ago.

On the 24th of June 1622, the landing of the enemies in the bay of Cacilhas Beach began at dawn. There were 13 Dutch ships, plus 2 English ships, with 800 operational men (600 Europeans and another 200 among Japanese, Malays and Gujaratis) that arrived to the shore with all the paraphernalia of armament in 32 boats…

How did Macau defend itself and manage to win this almost impossible battle? The Rui Cunha Foundation and the Association of Former Students of the Commercial School “Pedro Nolasco” (AAAEC), present a short documentary, entitled “Questioning History: The Dutch attack on Macau 400 years ago – 24 June 1622/2022”, starring the historian and researcher Beatriz Basto da Silva and directed by José Basto da Silva, within the scope of the series “Notebook of Stories” that had to be canceled due to the current Authorities’ Health restrictions.

The film is subtitled in Portuguese, Chinese and English.

The Rui Cunha Foundation will co-organize on Thursday, May 5th at 6:30pm, at the FRC Gallery venue, a Conference celebrating the World Day of the Portuguese Language, under the theme “Portuguese Letters: A Woman’s Love”, in partnership with the Macau Bookworms Association, IPOR-Instituto Português do Oriente, Orient Foundation and the Consulate General of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong.
The “Portuguese Letters” date from 1664 and were attributed to Mariana Alcoforado, a nun from the Convent of Beja, who wrote them to De Chamilly, a French soldier who fought for Portugal in the War of Restoration.
It is a document of exacerbated romanticism, the result of an absolute passion and dedication, which deserved comments from writers such as Stendhal and Rousseau. Perhaps this is why it has become a masterpiece of universal literature and was consecrated as a testimony of profound love. Despite its classicism, it has aroused great interest in the field of arts: theatre, cinema and opera.
In order to expose this great literary work, the following speakers were invited to participate in the session: Victor Correia (Lisbon, via zoom) with the theme "As Cartas Portuguesas – To love in Portuguese and in the feminine"; Leonor Diaz de Seabra (in person at FRC) with "Mariana Alcoforado and her time"; Luciana Barboza (Brazil, via zoom) with "Portuguese letters at play – Emotion on stage"; Myriam Cyr (Canada, via zoom) with "Letters of a Portuguese Nun – Uncovering the Mystery behind a 17th Century Forbidden Love"; João Guilherme Ripper (Brazil, via zoom) with "Compositional procedures in the opera ‘Cartas Portuguesas’"; Shee Va (in person at FRC) with "Letter to a soul mate"; and Lawrence Lei (in person at FRC) with "A perfumed dream".

The session will be held in Portuguese, with simultaneous interpretation into Cantonese.
Admission is free.
