MACAU RECEIVES THE FIRST EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY PORTUGUESE CERAMICS
PAULO VALENTIM REVEALS “SECRETS” OF THE CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS
First Individual Exhibition in Macao
Macao, 20th of February, 2013 – This coming 20th of March at 6:30pm, the exhibition “Secrets” by Portuguese Ceramist Paulo Valentim, will open at the Art Gallery Rui Cunha Foundation. The exhibit will contain 29 recent pieces by the actual resident teacher of the School of Arts and Crafts of The House of Portugal in Macao, the organizer of the exhibition. It will be the teachers’ debut on an individual exhibition in Macao.
The works, based on the tile’s technique, are divided into eight series and represent a reflection on what the masks, while symbolic artifacts, reveal and hide in fixed traditions throughout different times and spaces, from the initiation rites of esotericism to the masks used in ceremonies by the Indians of Brasil, Chinese puppets or Portuguese “caretos” from Trás-os-Montes in the north of Portugal.
According to the artist, “this exhibition is a project with several years that started from my interest in things that fascinate me and that I found during the various trips I made throughout the world, where I identified common traces in the different cultures and traditions, like masks playing an important role in the representation of personalities, revealing them and hiding them simultaneously.”
Paulo Valentim considers that “we live in a world where the secret and the aura of the mystery play a relevant symbolic role. To the visitors of the exhibition he proposes “a trip in search of a transcendent reality that accompanies us beyond the invisible, taking us to new identities.”
Paulo Valentim was born in 1964, in Lisbon, where he initiated his professional activities in 1984 at the art studio “Azularte”. Here he concludes his specialization in ancient painting with Master Ângelo Pereira with whom he creates the atelier “Hera Cintra”, where he assumes the artistic direction. In 1987 Paulo wins the Ceramics Painting International Competition organized by IEFP.
Up to his establishment in Macao in 2011 he developed an intensive teaching activity in several Portuguese institutions, including Professor of Painting at the School of Decorative Arts António Arroio. He also participated in several exhibitions, both in Portugal and abroad. Among his clients of ceramic and conservation and restoration works, are the Portuguese Presidency of the Republic, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Government and the Mayor House in Lisbon.
In Macao he has been collaborating with The House of Portugal in Macao as a ceramics teacher, teaching at their art studios.
Several of his works belong to private collections in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, United States, Brazil and Macao, among other countries and regions.
