PosterThe Rui Cunha Foundation opens today, TuesdayJune 9th at 6:30pm, the Solo Exhibition “The Studio of Alexandre Marreiros: Drawing and Painting”, by the renowned architect and visual artist in Macau’s art scene. This exhibition is the author’s own critical interpretation of the creative process, in a comprehensive analysis of his artistic production developed over the last decade.

The exhibition showcases 48 works of art, integrating a wide variety of techniques and materials, such as drawing, painting, photography, collage, screen printing, engraving and mixed media, on paper, canvas and aluminum. Configuring itself as a visual essay, the project «proposes to the visitor the identification of aesthetic constants, conceptual ruptures and visual lexicon, which characterizes this period of creation by Alexandre Marreiros, transforming the gallery space into an illustrative ‘studio’ of his aesthetic research and artistic production», reveals the manifesto.

«The gallery thus assumes the condition of a living organism: work tables, vernacular records and the iconographic imaginary that surrounds the artist’s practice are elevated to the category of fundamental documents, allowing each work to be understood not only as a final product, but also as a continuous process of observation and maturation of his artistic practice. In this sense, this exhibition establishes dialogues between pieces from different periods, revealing technical and conceptual continuities that the chronological order tends to hide».

Rather than exhibiting singular and individualized works, the author reveals the behind-the-scenes of his work, introducing us to «thematic groups within his oeuvre, united by specific guiding threads, be they themes, colors, textures, or the supports used. These groups are framed by pieces of furniture or artistic materials found in his studio, which constitute means of support to the creative environment for his artistic production», according to the artist’s proposal.

Of Portuguese nationality, Alexandre Marreiros lived in Portugal and Brazil, having established residence in Macau ten years ago. He has developed an «aesthetic and research path in the field of drawing and painting, focusing on concepts such as the human presence in permeable territories (favelas in Brazil, for example), color and textures in built environments, particularly reflecting on the most recent transformations in the urban and social environment of Macau». That kind of insight reveals the eye of the architect in his art, unrestricted and contemporary.

This event is part of the “June – Month of Portugal in Macau SAR 2026” Festival Program.

The artworks will be on display until June 20th, 2026.

Admission is free.
