The Rui Cunha Foundation presents today, TuesdayApril 21st at 6:30pm, the opening ceremony of the Solo Photo Exhibition “Galloping”, by Tam Keng (譚敬), paying homage to the Lunar Year of the Horse while displaying 26 high-quality images, captured on various trips to Inner Mongolia, between 2013 and 2019, in different landscapes and seasons of the years.

Co-organized by the Overseas Chinese Photographers Association (Macau) China, the exhibition evokes the auspicious sign of the Chinese zodiac in 2026. «The horse has long represented good fortune and progress, embodying the meaning of ‘success immediately upon arrival’. In this exhibition, the artist, with profound photographic expertise, uses a sensitive lens to capture the noble spirit and character of the horse», reveals the project’s preface.

The selection of images is part of the photographer’s archive, on a theme that accompanied him for several years, along with many excursions to the deserts and steppes of that Autonomous Region of China. He engaged with extras from the Mongol ethnic minority and well-bred military horses – today used only for cultural demonstrations –, but also herds of wild horses spotted after some perseverance and luck, according to Tam Keng.

«These works freeze the galloping momentum of the steed in an instant, and grasp the grace and vitality of the horse through light and shadow. The wilderness of nature, the strength of the movement, and the elegance of posture are all vividly preserved. The exhibition deconstructs the multi-layered imagery of the horse — from its vibrant life force across the plains, to its calm and elegant spirit, furthering the transformation and rebirth of the horse as a cultural symbol in modern times, and showcasing the fusion and coexistence of traditional culture with contemporary visual art», in the words of the photographer.

Tam Keng‘s images are rich in content and show the author’s deep artistic background. «Every piece of work I show, I hope it tells a story and creates an emotional connection. Even if I review it after a long time, it will always be a touching moment for me», are quotes the author revealed in his previous exhibition at FRC Gallery, in March 2023, under the title “Photography in Free Style”.

Tam Keng was born in Shanghai, China. He moved to Macau in the early 1980sand, in 1988, established the “Art House”, initially focused on advertising design. In 2000 he began to publish postcards and art books of his paintings and photographs “Macau Monuments”. In 2018, he exhibited “Story of the Old Teahouse”, an individual project hosted by the Macau Society of Digital Photography.
