Diligently – 2025.07.08
The Rui Cunha Foundation opens on Tuesday, July 8th at 6:30 pm, the Art Exhibition titled “Diligently”, by Ng Sok Chan, Jane (伍淑珍), an artist born and raised in Macau, who obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Drawing from Shanghai Normal University in 2007 and a Master’s degree in Education from South China Normal University in 2013.
Co-organized by FRC, the Macau Youth Art Association (澳門青年美術協會), and the Macau Artist Society (澳門美術協會), the project includes 20 oil and acrylic paintings, as well as collages, carefully selected by the curator Leong Sin Teng, Cinny (梁倩婷), a long-time friend of the artist.
Ng Sok Chan embodies multiple identities that are reflected in her paintings, such as artist, teacher, and mother. Through her brushwork, «we not only gain insights into her life story, but also develop a deeper understanding of the strength and resilience of modern women», reveals the curator and teacher.
According to the artist herself, «I am a mother, a daughter, a teacher, and above all, a housewife. I am part of the working class, but also a painter. Like many in society, I juggle various roles and identities and strive to manage the responsibilities each one brings. The burden can be overwhelming and I often wonder, ‘why can’t things be simpler?’ That is why «for me, painting is a sanctuary».
This self-healing process is «a means to restore my sanity», she says. «I use my art as a form of digestion and I paint to find peace». Ng Sok Chan adds that «the ‘Bound for Love’ series is my record of motherhood», a theme that is on display in this exhibition. And «‘We Need a Break’ reflects my understanding of Macau’s limitations in the global context». In conclusion, «I believe my paintings express more than my words ever could».
Ng Sok Chan is active in the fields of art education and painting creation and has exhibited her work all around the world. From 2016 to 2021, she lived in the United States, where she participated in joint exhibitions with local art associations. After returning to Macau in 2021, she established NUMBER FIVE STUDIO, to focus on oil paintings, acrylics, and watercolors creations. Her works have also been selected for several exhibitions and competitions, including the Annual Exhibition of Macao Visual Arts, the Guangdong Research Exhibition of Paintings with Comprehensive Materials, and the Hiii Illustration International Competition, among others.
The artworks will be on display until July 19th, 2025.
Admission is free.
