Halftone Meet #12 – 2025.07.10
The Rui Cunha Foundation and the Halftone Association will organize today, Tuesday, July 10th at 6:30pm, the Photo Magazine Launching of “Halftone Meet #12”, the latest edition that includes the work of members Jane Xu, João Palla, Jorge Veiga Alves, José Luís de Sales Marques, António Duarte Mil-Homens and Tang Kuok Hou.
The session will be presented by Francisco Ricarte and Sara Augusto, also featuring the participation of some members included in this issue.
As with previous issues, the publication is sponsored by Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU), which has supported the dissemination of contemporary photography by professionals and amateurs in the Macao SAR through this comprehensive, non-profit cultural project.
This issue showcases a total of six visual projects, two in black & white – opening and closing the magazine – and four in color. The first, by Jane Xu, which is entitled “Black enlivened by colors”, offers us a portrait of female intimacy, in line with the artist’s visual practice and her thematic research.
In a different way, but still in black & white, João Palla concludes in this issue the second part of his project “Whispers of White Gold”. The poetic expression of his visual proposal is perfectly articulated with the aesthetic effect obtained with the contrast between black and white.
The four other visual projects, in color, test different approaches to chromatic and thematic composition. Jorge Veiga Alves presents “Memories of Macau”, seeking to reinforce the effect of memory in the approach to the contemplation of traditional spaces, namely of a religious nature.
The second color project, by José Luís de Sales Marques, is dedicated to the famous Procession of the “Senhor dos Passos”, which takes place in Macau, underlining the role of this event not only in shaping the social and cultural context of the city, but also in its integration into the public space of Macau.
In the third project, António Duarte Mil-Homens presents us with a contemplative time in “Sunset, Moonrise”, addressing the nature and essence of the Alentejo landscape in southern Portugal. The succession of colors marks the hours and differentiates impressions, which make up the immensity of the Alentejo plain and its morphology.
In the fourth project, color also plays a key role in its expressiveness and visual conformation: “Photosynthesis”, by Tang Kuok Hou, proposes a social and aesthetic exploration of the city of Macau, thus reinforcing its role as a place of photographic study par excellence, which has justified a multitude of diverse approaches, both thematic, sociological or formal, given its expressive richness.
The “Halftone” Magazine, published quarterly, is an innovative initiative in the promotion of photography in the Region. To this end, it has published the photographic work of several of its members, as well as being a space open to all those who are interested in photography as an artistic and/or documentary expression, regardless of their experience or visual practice.
The session will be held in English.
The magazine can be purchased at FRC during the event.
Admission is free.
