The Rui Cunha Foundation opens today, Tuesday, March 18th at 6:30 pm, the Gongbi Art Exhibition “Burning Like a Lotus”, by artist Zou Li (鄒莉), a well-known Chinese female painter with over fifty years of career and experience, whose artistic focus is mainly centered around themes related to the history of Chinese women.

The artist presents here a collection of 30 pieces of Gongbi art, the traditional technique of fine and delicate brushdetail, on Japanese rice paper or silk fabric, and on oriental silk fans. The works were executed between 1997 and 2022.

Zou Li’s talent and conscious awareness of femininity, through her outstanding artistic expression, are present in the creations of «harmonious and moving artistic images of the beauty of women’s body and soul», according to statements by Ung Si Meng, Honorary President of the Macao Friendship Association of Former Members of the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

«For a long time, in order to fulfill her social responsibilities and her mission as an artist, Zou Li has actively participated in various major historical creations, including the long scroll “Empress Wu Zetian” and other major projects such as “One Hundred Pictures of Chinese Concubines”. Her work has been widely recognized and generally appreciated by experts, scholars, peers and the Chinese artistic society», further reveals the exhibition manifest.

Zou Li‘s works reflect the extent of her academic and artistic knowledge, which has long attracted widespread attention from domestic and international art circles. Her works have been warmly favored by art galleries, museums, public and private art institutions, and collectors. Throughout her career, the artist has created more than a thousand works, many of which are now spread throughout the mainland and the rest of the world. Zou Li has held more than fifty solo exhibitions at home and abroad, and has published over ten personal art catalogues. Recently, in April 2024, the China National Museum of Women and Children has acquired a collection of 593 pieces of her artworks.

Zou Li is a distinguished member of the China Artist Association, a researcher at the People’s Government of Guangdong Province Wenshi Research Hall, a Director of the Chinese Painting Institute of Guangdong Province, and the Honorary President of the Foshan Artists Association. Previously, she served as the Deputy Director of the Southern Branch of the China Central Institute for Culture and History, where she also did research work.

The artworks will be on display until April 5th, 2025.
