The Rui Cunha Foundation opens today, Tuesday, February 18th at 6:30pm, the Photography Exhibition “Macau in My Heart”, by Alex Chau Io Chong (仇耀中), a well-known local artist and professional photographer for over 30 years, who brings together this collection of 30 photos of the city, exploring different themes, styles and techniques. The curator is David Sit (薜達衛), an art critic, painter and university professor.

«As a native of Macau, I started a decades-long photography journey when I was in my teens. I used the lens, as a poet uses a pen, to transform such profound emotions into a visual language by capturing distinct moments, like the transformation of this city from a fishing village to a prosperous international city, and recording poetic imagery by intertwining history and modernity», reports the author on the exhibition manifesto.

The images captured illustrate the city’s architecture, old and new, the urban movement, the lights and colors, the rhythm of the population. «Here, Portuguese historic architecture and modern high-rise buildings complement each other, while traditions and innovation go hand in hand», comments Alex Chao. «The rapid economic development has brought prosperity to the city and has also made Macau a world-famous tourist attraction and entertainment center. Throughout this process, I witnessed many important moments: the opening of international casinos, the construction of new landmarks, and the annual fireworks», which make some of the examples portrayed in this display.

Alex Chao graduated from the Macau Polytechnic University, majoring in Visual Arts (art education). In his early years, he studied and devoted himself to professional photography and visual arts education. He was a professional photographer at the former Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Macau for many years. He was also director of the Macau Polytechnic Institute of Arts’ photography studio, with decades of research and practice in the development of photography. Alex Chao has extensive experience in the areas of visual design, book publishing, printing, multimedia, and exhibition planning.

The artworks will be on display until March 1st, 2025.

Following the exhibition opening, under the same title “Macau in My Heart”, Alex Chao will present a seminar of photography on Thursday, February 20th at 6:30pm, to be held only in Chinese language (Cantonese).

Admission is free.
