Kateryna Gavrylova – 2024.12.18
The Rui Cunha Foundation presents today, Wednesday, December 18th at 6:30pm, a special music evening with “Kateryna Gavrylova Piano Recital”, a pianist from Ukraine who is doing an artistic residency in Hong Kong, and who will be in the territory for this musical journey invited by the Macau Vocal Association.
Inspired by the theme of Reminiscences, Dreams, Hometown, Kateryna Gavrylova will lead the audience through time and space, with her touching interpretation and admirable talent, seeking to explore the emotional world of different composers.
The program includes four musical pieces of different styles. In addition to works by well-known masters such as Hungarian Franz Liszt (Le mal du pays / Homesickness) and French Maurice Ravel (Miroirs / Mirrors), the pianist will also present the local public with the Ukrainian music of Vasyl Barvinsky (Six Miniatures of Ukrainian Folk Songs), and will play the dream and meditation melodies for piano by Portuguese composer José Vianna da Motta (3 Scenas Portuguezas, op. 9).
Kateryna Gavrylova was born in the city of Poltava, in central Ukraine. She started playing the piano at the age of 5 and by the age of 12 she was already a winner of local piano competitions. She participated in important international piano competitions, such as the III Emil Gilels International Piano Competition in Odessa, Ukraine, and the Maria Yudina 1st Piano Competition, in Krasnodar, Russia. She has been invited to play recitals and chamber music concerts in Ukraine, Russia, China, India and Myanmar.
Since 2017, she has been learning dance and other body practices, as well as studying vocals and other musical instruments, such as flute, drums, guitar and violin. In 2020 she released her solo play “Auroville”, where she included script writing, acting, singing, dancing and musical composition. In 2022 she composed music for shadow theater, in an interactive recital that combined musicwith lighting and shadow images. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, she has given music classes for kid refugees, music healing sessions, and organized music projects for children close to frontline zone. In 2024, she is temporarily living in Hong Kong for her artistic research.
