Nam Van Sound Waves – 2024.11.09
The Rui Cunha Foundation presents today, Saturday, November 9th at 5:00pm, the “Joint Recital with MPU Music Students”, as part of the musical concert series Nam Van Sound Waves, co-organized by the Macau Vocal Association. This special Bel Canto soirée will introduce six voices of students from the Music Course of Macau Polytechnic University.
The program will feature sopranos Cai Shiyi (蔡詩怡), Lei Changkun (雷嫦坤), Wu Shuangrong (吳雙蓉), You Xirui (游昔芮), Liao Beijia (廖倍佳) and baritone Zong Xiaohuan (宗小歡), all attending the MPU Music Course under the guidance of teacher Dr. Wang Xiao (王瀟博士).
On the piano will be Ms. May Ho-Tung Poon (潘澔彤老師), pianist and professor at MPU, and also a guest musician at the Macau Orchestra. She was a Steinway Young Artist awarded by the prestigious international competition of famous manufacturer Steinway & Sons. In addition to the extensive list of participation in worldwide competitions, festivals, and recitals, she is also frequently requested as a jury member for performances and competitions at regional level.
The music selected for this session include classical pieces by composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, Gabriel Fauré, Hugo Wolf, Vincenzo Bellini, Francesco Paolo Tosti and Gioachino Rossini, as well as the vocal art songs of Chinese composers Ding Shande (丁善德), Zhou Yi(周易), Zhang Rui (張瑞), Wang Long (王龍), Zhao Jiping (趙季平), and Deng Yao(鄧垚). There will also be selected arias from operas “La Bohème” and “Turandot”from Giacomo Puccini. All the songs will be performed in the original language – Italian, French, German and Mandarin.
Bel Canto is considered the ultimate expression of the human voice. The Italian term was coined in the 18th century. This vocal technique emphasizes the beauty of sound and the artist’s technical ability, rather than the dramatic expression or romantic emotion. It is still taught today in similar ways as in the past.
