The Rui Cunha Foundation presents today, SaturdayMay 11th at 5:00pm, a “Joint Recital with Music Students from MPU”, as part of the musical concert series Nam Van Sound Waves, co-organized by the Macau Vocal Association. This special Bel Canto soirée will introduce new voices of students from the Music Course of Macau Polytechnic University.

The program will feature mezzo-soprano Xiangbing Liu (劉祥冰), who won the gold medal in the “China Model Student Vocal Competition” for three consecutive years, and the silver medal in the “Hong Kong Professional Vocal Competition”, in 2023. She will be joined by sopranos Changkun Lei (雷嫦坤), Shuangrong Wu (吳雙蓉), and Shuting Xiong (熊舒婷), all attending the 2nd year of UPM Music Course, under the guidance of teachers Dr. Wang Xiao (王瀟) and Dr. Mai Jiali (麥嘉梨).

On the piano will be Dr. May Poon (潘澔彤), pianist and professor at UPM, and also a guest musician at the Macau Orchestra. She was a Steinway Young Artistawarded by the prestigious international competition of famous manufacturer Steinway & Sons. In addition to the extensive list of participation in worldwide competitions, festivals, and recitals, she is also frequently requested as a jury member for performances and competitions at regional level.

The music selected for this session includes classical pieces by composers such as the Austrian Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Frenchman Georges Bizet, the Germans Robert Schumann and Richard Strauss, the Italians Francesco Paolo Tosti and Pietro Mascagni, the Korean Yoon Hakjun, and the Chinese Wang Long and Gao Weijie, as well as Inner Mongolian folk songs.

Bel Canto is considered the ultimate expression of the human voice. The Italian term was coined in the 18th century. This vocal technique emphasizes the beauty of sound and the artist’s technical ability, rather than the dramatic expression or romantic emotion. It is still taught today in similar ways as in the past.
