Heritople – 2026.06.24

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents today, Wednesday, June 24th at 6:30pm, a film screening of the Documentary “Heritople” (Macau, 2024), followed by a Talk with director António Salas Sanmarful, with António Monteiro representing the International Institute of Macau, which commissioned and produced the project, and with Matias Lao, president of the Macau Heritage Ambassadors Associationand one of the participants in the film.

“Heritople” is the title of the trilingual documentary, which premiered in October 2024, aiming to highlight the importance of the territory’s cultural heritagethrough a series of interviews with various residents. According to the synopsis, “Macau, China, is a city with a unique cultural mix. With the stories of eight people from different backgrounds we get a glimpse of how the culture and heritage of this city affect the population that live in it».

Over the course of 62 minutes, various testimonies build the narrative of different life experiences in the territory, where Western and Eastern cultures intersect. «In a city rich in cultural events and festivities of intangible heritage, testimonies were recorded to help understanding the valuable legacy, and the importance of preserving and continuing this legacy», stated the press release issued for the film’s premiere.

The interviews include the participation of Jorge Rangel, president of the International Institute of Macau; Matias Lao, president of the Macau Heritage Ambassadors Association; Elisabela Larrea, president of the Macanese Culture Research Association; André Lui, Architect; Ip Tat, president of Na Tcha Temple Association; Harry Kwah Hou Ieong, president of the Macao Cultural Heritage Reinventing Studies Association; Santos Pinto, owner of “O Santos” Restaurant; and also Lin Yin Cong, High School Teacher and Founder of Júbilo 31 Booksbookstore.

António Sanmarful was born in Macau and studied Camera and Lighting for Cinema in Madrid, Spain, where he continued to work for almost a decade. He then worked in advertising, television series, music videos, and short films as a Photography/Cinematography Director. He returned to Macau in 2014, where he continues to develop his work in the same professional field and undertake new filming projects.

The documentary was produced by the International Institute of Macau (IIM) and sponsored by the Macau Foundation.
