The Role of Macau in Chinese Multilateralism – 2026.05.28
The Rui Cunha Foundation presents today, Thursday, May 28th at 6:30pm, a session from the Circle of Ideas series, titled “The Role of Macau in Chinese Multilateralism”, with the participation of Prof. Cátia Miriam Costa, PhD, Researcher and Professor at the Centre for International Studies at ISCTE-IUL, in Portugal, as guest speaker.
The talk will focus on «Macau’s handover to China and the transformation of the territory’s landscape, establishing it as a Special Administrative Region. Drawing on its historical ties with Portuguese-speaking countries during the period of Portuguese Administration, Macau emerged as a cosmopolitan territory, traditionally open to the world. This long-standing exposure to international connections explains the basis for the role that Beijing’s central government assigned to Macau», according to the conference’s proposal.
Consequently, the territory became «one of the para-diplomacy actors of Chinaand the headquarters of the international organization it initiated, the Macau Forum. Recently, the central Government decided to broaden Macau’s privileged foreign affairs role to include relations with Spanish-speaking countries, which leads us to reflect on Macau’s role in Chinese multilateralism».
Prof. Cátia Miriam Costa is a renowned Researcher and Professor at the Centre for International Studies at ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon, where she oversees the Global Politics and Security Group of Studies as Coordinator. She also directs the Chair of Inter-regionalism and Global Governance at the European Institute of International Studies, in Stockholm. Regularly, she collaborates with the University of Macau (Institute of European Studies and Institute for Global Studies and Public Administration) and also with the City University of Macau.
The session will be held in English.
