The Tea in Macau – 2026.05.19
The Rui Cunha Foundation opens today, Tuesday, May 19th at 6:30pm, a Photo and Painting Joint Exhibition “The tea in Macau: Revealing Details and Leaving Space for Imagination”, by Cássia Schutt (Photos) and Lily Lee (Painting). This is an encounter between two artists, a Brazilian photographer and a Chinese painter, united by the same curious and captivated gaze.
The exhibition showcases 34 works of art: 16 photographs and 18 paintings that appear whispering back and forth «in a subtle conversation», the artists describe. «Cássia’s lens focuses on intimate details, gestures, and textures. Lily’s brushopens onto wider, living scenes, where atmosphere and silence coexist. Together, they trace Macau’s tea houses and document the presence of tea and its traditions in the city today», reveals the exhibition manifesto.
Though their cultures speak in different tongues, their arts connect through a shared sensibility in depicting Macau’s tea traditions. In 2024, the two «began a shared journey through Macau’s tea houses. Over many visits, conversations, and quiet observations, their paths intertwined around a simple, timeless ritual: tea. What started as a series of encounters gradually became an ongoing artistic dialogue, one that continues to unfold and deepen over time».
Cássia Schutt is a Brazilian photographer, producer and creative director, residing in the territory for almost twenty years. She has published books, features several exhibitions on her resume, and is a member of the Halftone Macao Photographic Association.
Lily Lee is a Chinese painter with a Master’s degree in Oil Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Huaqiao University. Residing in the territory, she is the founder of Lily Handmade Art Co. Ltd. in Macau and a member of the Macau Artists Association.
With this exhibition, the artists celebrate their friendship and the mutual desire to portray, through art, traditions as ancient as the tea ritual in local culture and the old tea shops that are now becoming rare, so that future generations can learnand perpetuate these visual memories.
The artworks will be on display until May 30th, 2026.
Admission is free.
