POSTER

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Tuesday, February 3rd at 6:30pm, a session from the Circle of Ideas series, titled “The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Society: A Psychological Perspective”, with special Guest Speaker Prof. Dr. Christian Montag, PhD, Distinguished Professor at the Centre of Cognitive and Brain Sciences (CCBS) of University of Macau.

Since the introduction of ChatGPT, the world has been discussing how Artificial Intelligence will shape societies. «These discussions are often conducted without sufficient nuance, failing to go beyond the thinking of AI doomers and AI boomers. The reality is far more complex. Against this background, the IMPACT framework will be introduced as a guide for more accurately assessing how Artificial Intelligence affects societies. The acronym IMPACT refers to the Interplay of Modality, Person, Area, Country/Culture, and Transparency—all variables that must be considered to understand how AI, a general-purpose technology comparable to electricity, should be evaluated», the specialist suggests.

Prof. Christian Montag joined the University of Macau in April 2025 as Associate Director of the Institute of Collaborative Innovation (ICI). His work focuses on the intersection of psychology, neuroscience, and digital technologies, including AI’s impact on behavior and digital phenotyping, areas where he has made significant progress. He holds a degree in Psychology from University of Giessen, Germany (2006), and a PhD in Psychology from University of Bonn, Germany (2009), where he has also completed his Habilitation Dissertation “vénia legendi” (permission to lecture) in 2011.

Last year, Prof. Christian Montag has been named in the prestigious World’s Top 2% Scientists list for 2025. This ranking, compiled by Stanford University (California, USA), evaluates scientists based on standardized and recognized indicators. With over 400 peer-reviewed publications, his work addresses pressing issues such as Internet use disorders and AI’s influence on mental health.

The session will be held in English.

Admission is free.
