The Rui Cunha Foundation opens on Tuesday, August 5th at 6:30 pm, the Joint Calligraphy Exhibition “Keep Going, The Future is Bright”, by the Professor and Students of the Art and Literature Class at Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Centre, co-organizer of the event, honoring the venerable Master Hsing Yun.

The display features around 50 works of Chinese calligraphy and paintings, which aim to continuing the spirit of Master Hsing Yun, founder of the Buddhist Center, whose poor eyesight worsened in his later years. The Master developed the use of the “heart eye” and the “Dharma eye” to write his unique ”one-stroke” calligraphy, hoping to convey compassion, wisdom, peace, and light through his creations.

Dharma is a multifaceted concept that broadly refers to the principles of cosmic order, righteousness, duty, and the path to a meaningful existence. In Buddhism, this encompasses the individual’s moral obligations, ethical conduct, and the natural laws that govern the universe.

This project embraces the works of Art and Literature Students of Professor Hok-lon Yim, a young and influential calligrapher and painter from Macau who was invited by the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Centre to teach calligraphy and painting to all enthusiasts, regardless of experience, using brush and ink to convey blessings and to bring joyto others.

The founding of the Macau Buddhist Centre can be traced back to early 1989, when Master Hsing Yun preached the Dharma at several public places in Hong Kong, gathering increasing numbers of devotees from the neighboring territory, but also attracting spontaneous groups from Macau to attend the lectures. Master Hsing Yun was then invited to send disciples to Macau to preach the Dharma, while he himself came here numerous times between 1991 and 2014, delivering deeply moving lectures, always to packed auditoriums.

In 1996, the Centre was officially registered as a non-profit charitable organization by the Government, beginning its mission to spread the Dharma in Macau, following the principle of “promoting humanistic Buddhism and building a pure land of light”. It is a branch of the regional Fo Guang Shan monastic order and the largest urban Buddhist center in Macau.

The artworks will be on display until August 9th, 2025.

 Admission is free.
