The Future of Artificial Intelligence – 2025.04.24
The Rui Cunha Foundation presents today, Thursday, April 24th at 6:30pm, a session of the Circle of Ideas series, titled “he Future of Artificial Intelligence: To Regulate or To Educate, that is the Question”, with the participation of Prof. Rostam J. Neuwirth, Distinguished Professor of Law and Head for Department of Global Legal Studies at the University of Macau.
The rapid development of Artificial intelligence (AI) over the past few years has triggered intense debates around the world about the potential of both great benefits as well as serious risks related to the use of AI in virtually all areas of life. Consequently, several jurisdictions have already adopted AI-specific laws or regulations while others are still discussing or preparing them.
«However, the regulation of AI faces serious unprecedented regulatory challenges due to the rapid pace of innovation, as well as the complex, cross-cutting, cross-boundary and cross-cultural nature of AI and related technologies. These factors render a successful, coherent and future-proof regulation of AI very difficult and likely require novel and more interdisciplinary approaches», acknowledges the highly-regarded expert in his proposal of intentions.
Addressing these challenges and «critically questioning the dominant narrativeof AI regulation, the lecture proposes to shift the attention from regulation to the field of education and AI literacy, as a way to fully take advantage of the potential benefits of AI while also minimizing its serious risks» The guest speaker will also invoke some of the «present and future dangers related to AI and discerningly assess what it means for human intelligence in general, and education in particular».
