The Rui Cunha Foundation opens on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at 18:30, the exhibition by Liang Yurong “Here and Now”. Jointly organised by the Rui Cunha Foundation, the Macau Youth Art Association, and the Macau Artist Society, the exhibition highlights the artist’s decade-long creative trajectory from 2016 to 2026, through a selection of 24 oil paintings and mixed-media works.

The exhibition traces Liang’s artistic journey, which has transformed from early observations of still life and self-portraiture to the contemporary translation of Macau’s historical imagery. His latest creative phase delves into deep, introspective explorations of life in his “Sheng Xi (Life Breath)” and “Tong Xi (Shared Breath)” series. The shifting of perspective, as the exhibition preface stated, is what has been left by time. In between the classical and the contemporary, decay and growth, the exhibition invites audiences to reflect: Is “xi (breath)” an ending, or a new form of continuation?

The concept of time is the core of this exhibition. In her opening remarks, curator Jenny Zhang Huimin noted that, in the context of art, time can be “folded”. By brining fading things back into the present, the artist allows different dimensions of time and space to collide, exploring history, memory, and the trajectory of life as a way to resist forgetting and the irreversible nature of linear time. She emphasised: “No matter how we look back, reminisce, or try to hold on to time, in the end, we can only live in the present—here and now.”

Reflecting on the transition, artist Liang Yurong, shared how his focus has gradually evolved. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree from the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts and his master’s degree from the Macau University of Science and Technology, he is currently pursuing a doctorate at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. His artistic path moved from an early attention to technical forms such as brushwork, colour, light and shadow, to the exploring of “time” through the appropriation on Macau’s historical scenes, then to a deeper contemplation of life itself. This shift is what drives his current turn toward mixed media. By letting martials to naturally contract, crack, and transform, the artist becomes a spectator witnessing the works grow on their own. “Sometimes the more ‘perfect’ you paint,” Liang says, “the further you move from authentic lived experience.”

This exhibition brings together representative works including “Still Life Sketch,” “Self-Portrait,” “Heart Imprint: Triptych,” “Macau’s Coastal Waters,” “The Waves As Before” series, “Life Breath,” and “Shared Breath.”

The artworks will be on display until July 18, 2026.
