Between Plastic – 2026.01.27
The Rui Cunha Foundation opens on Tuesday, 27th January at 6:30 pm, the Solo Art Exhibition “Between Plastic”, by Ng Sekha (吳析夏), a painting, performance and installation local artist local artist, who in recent years has focused his work on exploring ‘plastic’ as a concept and as a material, reflecting its versatility in different artistic media and genres.
Co-organized by the FRC, the Macau Youth Art Association (澳門青年美術協會) and the Macau Artist Society (澳門美術協會), the exhibition includes 19 artworks of oil and acrylic painting, sculpture and glass installation, curated by Guo Yun (郭贇) and under the academic guidance of Ung Vai Meng (吳衛鳴).
According to the exhibition’s preface, «in “Between Plastic”, the artist translates her earlier performance works into easel painting, while reintroducing plastic hemispheres into the pictorial field». As an example, «transparent plastic is repeatedly inserted between painting, performance, and installation; through its semi-concealing, malleable, and almost weightless materiality, it constructs an ambiguous perceptual structure—neither fully obstructive nor fully transparent—placing the body, the image, and the act of viewing in a constant state of tension and instability».
The idea can have multiple meanings, which Ng Sehka took advantage of in her creative process. «In the Western context, ‘plastic’ refers not only to the material itself, but also extends to plastic surgery, consumer culture, and the social mechanisms through which the body is designed, regulated, and observed. In the Chinese language, however, ‘plastic’ (塑) simultaneously signifies shaping, reshaping, and regeneration, pointing toward a state of incompletion and continuous becoming. It is within this semantic tension that Ng Sekha operates, transforming plastic into a method rather than a singular medium—one that mediates between perception and structure, and between individual experience and social mechanisms», refers the same manifesto.
Ng Sekha holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, in the United States ofAmerica, and is now a PhD student of Art History and Art Theory at the Faculty of Humanities and Arts of the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST). Her works include performance art, installation art and easel painting, focusing on the intersection of gender philosophy, identity and contemporary art. She has held solo and group exhibitions in Macau and abroad, notably at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Beijing, the Shanghai Exhibition Centre, Tank Shanghai, the Chengdu Biennial, the Guangzhou Museum of Art, the Shenzhen Luohu Art Museum, the Asia World-Expo in Hong Kong, the Gwangju International Biennial (South Korea), the Lisbon Biennial (Portugal), and elsewhere.
The artworks will be on display until February 7th, 2026.
