The Rui Cunha Foundation opens today, TuesdayDecember 2nd at 6:30pm, the Oil Painting Exhibition “Shaping . Viewing the Scene”, by Sunny Sit Ka Kit (薛家傑), an artist who focuses his work on the psychological changes and ethical balance of male identity, while exploring the reverse of the mirror, in the way society and social networks understand the role of the modern man.

Co-organized by FRC, the Macau Youth Art Association (澳門青年美術協會), and the Macau Artist Society (澳門美術協會), the exhibition includes 15 impacting artworks, where Sit Ka Kit uses oil painting as a medium, drawing experiences as a husband and a father, and exploring themes of “identity formation” and “the responsibility of viewing”.

According to the curator, Kit Tam Chon (譚俊傑), «in contemporary arts, the introspective writings of male artists have often been overlooked. While female art boldly addresses themes of identity and social power, the psychological experiences and ethical reflections of male when confronting with family, emotions, and societal responsibilities are often hidden beneath rationality and silence».

The exhibition “Shaping . Viewing the Scene” consists of two series, “Private Space” and “Public Space”. «The former illustrates the psychological transformations of men within the context of family, while the latter observes social events from a bystander perspective, reflecting ethics and public consciousness. Resonating the two series, to construct a dual mirror structure where the self and the world intersect», reveals the artistic manifesto.

In the “Private Space” series, «Sunny uses family experience as the starting point of his narration», where «through calm and measured brushworks, he captures the tension of fatherhood, responsibility, and freedom on the canvas», considers Kit Tam Chon. In the “Public Space” series, the artist starts from social media and public events, reflecting on his «bystander perspective to explore themes such as ethics, public pressure, and the state of existence». Through his objective lens and without imposing personal feelings, he thereby attempts to fostering a re-examination of the “ethical scene” in which we live.

Born in Macau, Sit Ka Kit is currently pursuing a PhD in Fine Arts. He obtained his Master’s degree from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2019 and was an exchange student at the College of Fine Arts at the Seoul National University of Science and Technology in 2017. He has been invited to participate in the China National Art Funds’ “Macau Elegance Reborn – Fine Depiction of Mountain, Sea, and City Images” art creation project; in the China National Art Fund Young Artists Creation Programme; and the third “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023” collateral exhibition. He received nominations and awards in the Greater Bay Area, and has also held solo exhibitions at locations like Guangzhouand Zhongshan.
