Documentary . “METAMÓRṖHOSIS” – 2025.06.04
The Rui Cunha Foundation presents today, Wednesday, June 4th at 6:30pm, the documentary film METAMÓRṖHOSIS, directed by António Luís Moreira (2024, Portugal), shown for the first time in Macau at FRC Gallery. The event is part of the Festivities Program of “June, Month of Portugal in the Macao SAR”.
According to the synopsis, «METAMÓRṖHOSIS is a thought-provoking documentary that explores the transformation of rural communities through social and environmental changes. The film follows the stories of three village womenwhose lives reflect broader social mutations of modernity, with the Portuguese Schist Villages as a background scenery».
«During the script, we meet a man who has never abandoned the land where he was born. Seeing the villages condemned to depopulation, he fought with vision and tenacity for the collective emancipation of the villages through the construction of basic infrastructure and the recovery of fading cultural traditions», the description states.
Focusing on the deconstruction of conventional social norms, METAMÓRṖHOSIShighlights how personal and collective identities evolve amid changing realities, offering a compelling analysis of rural life, memory and tensions between tradition and modernity. The viewer is constantly confronted with the contrast between the specific dynamics of these territories, seen as geographical spaces linked to human-environmental relations and the globalized models of urban communities.
METAMÓRṖHOSIS has participated in a few national and international competitions, having won the Luleå International Film Festival – Sweden 2024 (Best Feature Documentary Film and Best Debut Documentary Film), the Filmzen International Competition of Chicago – USA 2024-2025 (Best Documentary Film and Best First Time Filmmaker), the virtual Best Hollywood Day Short Film Festival 2025 (Best Documentary Film), and the Portugal Indie Film Festival in Cascais 2025 (Best Documentary). The film was also nominated for the Barcelona Indie Awards – Spain 2025, was a semi-finalist at the 12th ARFF Barcelona International Film Festival – Spain 2025, and was a finalist at the Dallas Independent Film Festival – USA.
