The Rui Cunha Foundation presents on Thursday, May 29th at 6:30pm, a new series of conferences on the theme of Being Macanese in the 21st Century – Culture, Tradition, Identity, Challenges, with the first round-table under the title “Challenges of Being Macanese Today!”.

The session will be led by José Luís de Sales Marques, President of the Council of Macanese Communities, bringing together as guest speakers: Elisabela Larrea, Researcher, Founder and President of MACRA – Macanese Culture Research Association; António Monteiro, President of AJM – Macanese Youth Association; Rachel Antonia Handley, Young Member of Hong Kong’s Club Lusitano; and Miguel Silva (via Zoom), Affiliate of Casa de Macau in Portugal and great-nephew of the last poet of Patuá, Adé dos Santos Ferreira.

The event aims to address «the way of life of the Macanese people, the community or communities, in Macau and abroad, and their daily challenges in maintaining the Macanese experience of being and feelinghistorically in between two cultures: Portuguese and Chinese.

The purpose of this series of talks is a constructive discussion looking to the present and the future, without forgetting the tradition and the differential identity landmarks, especially in Gastronomy and Patuá Theatre, both Intangible Heritage of the Macao SAR and the PRC», according to the organizers.

The conference will be held in English.
