POSTER

The Rui Cunha Foundation presents today, Tuesday, October 29th at 6:30pm, a “Law Conference”, including two lectures on the international promotion of peace and security in Europe and Asia, inserted on the Reflections at Sunset series, with the participation of Professor Jónatas Machado, Dean of the Faculty of Law at University of Coimbra, and Professor Muruga Ramaswamy, professor of the Faculty of Law at University of Macau. The moderator will be Professor Manuel Lopes Porto, who was a Member of the European Parliament and World President of the European Community Studies Associations.

The presence of the highly acclaimed guest speakers was prompted by the 14th International Conference organized by the Centre for Law Studies of Faculty of Law at University of Macau, this year dedicated to “Studies on Civil Code, Commercial Code and Civil Procedure Code, Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Macao SAR”, from 29th to 31st October, which is annually sponsored by the Rui Cunha Foundation.

The first intervention, by Professor Jónatas Machado, is entitled “The European Union and the Promotion of International Peace”, according to which, «the European Union constitutes a manifestation par excellence of the constructive power of political and legal ideas and its ability to respond to the desires for justice and peace of individuals and nations. The result of an integration processdesigned and carried out in the aftermath of the Second World War, it also demonstrates that gradual transformations can culminate in qualitative changesand paradigmatic shifts. What began as an attempt to relaunch the economic growth of European nations that emerged from the armed conflict and prevent the use of raw materials and energy sources for military purposes, became a political union structured in accordance with constitutional principles of respect for human rights, democracy, and the rule of social and environmental law”.

The second intervention, by Professor Muruga Ramaswamy, is entitled “Revisiting the Aspirations of the ASEAN in Promoting Peace and Security: Are Member States Sufficiently Responsive in Undertaking International Legal Obligations?”. According to the proposal, «the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a key regional organization prominently known for its role in promoting economic relations among the Southeast Asian States, also carries the mantle of much less known mandate of enhancing security cooperation among its member states. This paper aims at assessing whether ASEAN and the member states’ initiatives are sufficiently well balanced between the dual desideratum of promoting prosperity and peace.».

This conference will be held in English.
