Journey to the East – 2025.09.24
“Journey to the East: Classical Music and Fantasies of Distant Lands”
Lecture-Recital Online Presentation:
Owing to the impact of Typhoon Ragasa, the lecture-Recital Journey to the East: Classical Music and Fantasies of Distant Lands, originally scheduled for September 24, 2025 (Wednesday), has been transitioned to a pre-recorded format. The event is therefore officially broadcasted on Fundação Rui Cunha’s Website and Facebook page to be enjoyed by everyone.
This event is co-organized by the Macao Musicological Association, the Macao Music Performance Association, and the Fundação Rui Cunha, with support from the Macao Youth Music and Art Exchange Association and the venue for recording provided by the Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra Association. All music and culture enthusiasts are warmly invited to view it online.
Curated by musicologist Dr. Sio Pan Leong, the event marks the third consecutive year of the annual themed lecture-recital series. It features performances by pianists Vicky Tong and Christy Tong, tenor Elyot Lou, harpist Jessica Chung, and violinist Chak Lam Ip. Centered on the theme of the “Orient,” the lecture-concert invites audiences to experience the vivid depictions and imaginations of distant lands in classical music through captivating performances.
Journey to the East seeks to foster cross-cultural musical dialogue, transcending the geographical boundaries of “East” and “West.” The event unfolds through musical performances and commentary, beginning with “Oriental Fantasies,” journeying through “Exotic Landscapes,” and culminating in “Chinese Imagery.” The carefully curated program features works by composers such as Debussy, Woodforde-Finden, and Mahler, offering a deep exploration of the “Eastern” imagery crafted by European and American composers from the 19th to early 20th centuries.
Dr. Sio Pan Leong, the event’s curator, remarked, “Journey to the East is not only a voyage through Western musical traditions but also a profound exploration of Eastern cultural connotations.” He hopes that such lecture-recitals will inspire greater public appreciation and understanding of classical music’s culture and history.
Don’t miss it!
