In large scale public interest cases, who holds the right to settle the claims is an intriguing question that has gained a renewed interest in the light of the recent Meta multibillion dollar settlement deal reached in the concerted action against the online addictive characteristics of its social media applications.

The talk examines the legitimacy and legal intricacies arising from the proposed deal, due to the clear evidence of division of interests arising from the classic dichotomy of “to sue or settle?”, as well as, some strings attached to a part of the deal that is contingent upon the third-party compliance with certain terms of settlement, which arguably raises various legal intricacies among others. Finally, the talk alludes to a more pertinent issue of what remedies lie for users beyond the jurisdiction of US, arising from the global reach of Meta’s services.
